"And the evil to be attacked is not sin, suffering, greed, ignorance, drink, war ... but simply poverty.”
The conflict in the play Major Barbara focuses on the best way to save humanity. Barbara Undershaft, a major in the Salvation Army, believes by feeding the unemployed and the ne'er-do-wells, she can save their souls. On the other hand, her father Andrew Undershaft, a rich armament industrialist, believes poverty is the worst crime and his method of offering fair wages is the only way to proceed.
Should the Salvation Army accept money from whiskey producers or cannon makers? Should Barbara's fiancé accept the ownership of Undershaft's Cannon Works? These are just a few of the questions this play explores.
